Biographie

Compositeur et chef d’orchestre, Alexandre Desplat, lauréat de deux Oscars et onze fois nommé aux Oscars, par sa filmographie prolifique et ses collaborations avec Stephen Frears, Terrence Malick, David Fincher, Kathryn Bigelow, Jacques Audiard, Wes Anderson, Roman Polanski, George Clooney ou Guillermo del Toro est l’un des plus dignes héritiers des maîtres français de la musique de film.

Elevé dans un métissage culturel et musical grâce à sa mère grecque et son père français qui ont fait leurs études et se sont mariés en Californie, il grandit en écoutant les symphonistes français, Ravel ou Debussy, les musiques du monde et le jazz.

Il étudie le piano et la trompette avant de choisir la flûte traversière comme instrument principal. Auditeur libre dans la classe d'analyse de Claude Ballif au CNSM, il enrichit son éducation musicale classique en étudiant les musiques brésiliennes ou africaines. Il enregistrera ainsi plus tard avec Carlinhos Brown ou Ray Lema.

Cinéphile passionné de musique de films, c’est autant sa sensibilité musicale que son approche intime du langage cinématographique qui vont permettre son rapport privilégié avec les cinéastes. Inspiré par les partitions de Maurice Jarre, Bernard Herrmann, Nino Rota ou Georges Delerue, c’est après avoir entendu la partition de John Williams pour Star Wars qu’il décide de composer exclusivement pour le grand écran.

Lors de l’enregistrement de son premier long métrage il rencontre la violoniste Dominique Lemonnier dite Solrey. C'est le commencement d’un échange artistique exceptionnel puisqu’elle devient sa soliste de prédilection et sa directrice artistique. Avec son sens aigu de l'interprétation, son esprit créatif et son jeu violonistique singulier, Solré a inspiré les compositions d’Alexandre, influençant sa musique en profondeur, initiant une nouvelle façon d’écrire pour les cordes au cinéma.

Collaborateur de Jacques Audiard depuis son premier film, il crée pour ses œuvres des compositions fortes et singulières et il remporte en 2005 pour De battre mon cœur s’est arrêté l’Ours d'argent de la Berlinale, et son premier César. Il collabore en France avec Philippe de Broca ou Francis Girod mais avec La jeune fille à la perle de Peter Webber, sa 50e partition pour le cinéma, il obtient une première nomination aux Golden Globes et aux BAFTAs et débute son ascension à Hollywood. Menant de front carrière américaine et collaborations européennes et restant fidèle à ses metteurs en scène, il compose entre autres les partitions de Syriana de Stephen Gaghan, Birth de Jonathan Glazer, Coco avant Chanel d’Anne Fontaine, L’armée du Crime de Robert Guediguian, Largo Winch de Jérôme Salle, L'ennemi intime ou Hostage de Florent Siri.

Les prix et les collaborations avec les plus grands metteurs en scène s’enchaînent alors. En 2007, il reçoit sa première nomination aux Oscars pour le film de Stephen Frears The Queen et remporte son premier European Film Award. La même année, il remporte le Golden Globe, le Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award, et le World Soundtrack Award pour la partition du film de John Curran The Painted Veil, interprété par le pianiste Lang Lang. Il compose en 2008 pour Lust, Caution d'Ang Lee et The Curious Case of Benjamin Button de David Fincher qui lui vaudra une deuxième nomination aux Oscars ainsi qu’une quatrième nomination aux Golden Globes et aux BAFTAs.

Avec sa partition pour The Ghost Writer de Roman Polanski il remporte en 2010 un deuxième César et un deuxième European Film Award. La même année il écrit la musique de Twilight-New Moon de Chris Weitz, dont l'album est disque de platine, et du film de Tom Hooper The King's Speech pour lequel il remporte le BAFTA, le Grammy Award et est nommé pour la quatrième fois aux Oscars et pour la cinquième fois aux Golden Globes.

En 2010-2011 il écrit les musiques d’Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 et Harry Potter ans the Deathly Hallows Part 2 lequel devient le troisième plus grand succès de tous les temps. Il compose en 2011 neuf partitions, dont Tree of Life de Terence Malik, Carnage de Roman Polanski, Fantastic Mr Fox de Wes Anderson qui lui vaut une nouvelle nomination aux Oscars, La fille du puisatier de Daniel Auteuil et Ides of March de George Clooney.

En 2012 il collabore avec Kathryn Bigelow pour Zero Dark Thirty, Matteo Garrone pour Reality, Gilles Bourdos pour Renoir, Jérôme Salle pour ZULU, Wes Anderson pour Moonrise Kingdom et Jacques Audiard pour De rouille et d’os pour lequel il remporte un troisième César. Pour sa partition d'Argo de Ben Affleck, Oscar du meilleur film, il est nommé pour la sixième fois aux BAFTAs, et pour la cinquième fois aux Golden Globes et aux Oscars.

Il signe en 2013 les partitions de The Monuments Men de George Clooney, La Vénus à la fourrure de Roman Polanski, et est nommé au BAFTAs et aux Oscars pour Philomena de Stephen Frears.

En 2014 il compose la musique de Godzilla de Gareth Edwards, et reçoit, fait exceptionnel, deux nominations aux Oscars pour The Imitation Game de Morten Tyldum et pour The Grand Budapest Hotel de Wes Anderson, pour lequel il remporte un BAFTA, un Grammy et un Oscar.

Membre du jury du Festival de Cannes en 2012, il devient en 2014 le premier compositeur Président du jury de la Mostra de Venise. Couronnant de longues années de collaboration il a dirigé en Décembre 2014 le London Symphony Orchestra pour un concert de ses œuvres au Barbican Theater de Londres.

En 2018, Alexandre Desplat reçoit un deuxième Oscar, un Golden Globe et un BAFTA pour La forme de l'eau de Guillermo del Toro. Il est nommé en 2019 aux Oscars et aux Golden Globe pour Isle of Dogs de Wes Anderson, et en 2020 aux Oscars, Golden Globes et British Film Awards pour le film de Greta Gerwig Little Women.
